Dental Examination

More than 500 species of bacteria thrive in our mouths at any given time. These bacteria constantly form dental plaque, a sticky, colorless film that can cling to teeth and cause health problems. It is important to have an oral hygiene cleaning on a regular basis (at least twice a year) to prevent buildups and increasing health risks.

When you go for a dental exam, your experienced dentist checks your fillings and may suggest that you replace any loose or broken ones. Your dentist also looks for signs of decay, such as brown or black spots and may want to use X-rays to take a closer look at problem spots. If you have a cavity, your dentist may keep an eye on it (if it's small) or fill it right away. If a large cavity is not filled, it can get bigger and cause pain. The tooth may even have to be removed and replaced with a false (or artificial) tooth.

Used to prevent the spread of tooth decay or correct any cosmetic damage, a filling is one of the ways our dentists preserve your dental health.

If your tooth is damaged but not lost, a crown can be used to restore its shape, appearance and function. You may need a crown if you have a root canal, a large filling in a tooth or a broken tooth. A crown, also called a cap, is a hollow, artificial tooth used to cover a fractured, chipped or decayed tooth. The crown restores the tooth and protects it from further damage. Crowns can also be used to cover a discoloured or misshapen tooth. A tooth that has been fixed with a crown looks and works very much like a natural tooth.

What to do when you have a toothache?

First call your dentist. Explain your symptoms and ask to be seen as soon as possible. Then ease the pain. Take an over-the-counter pain medicine that works for you, but do not put the pills on your sore tooth. Hold an ice pack against your face at the spot of the sore tooth. Do not put a heating pad, a hot water bottle, or any other source of heat on your jaw. Heat will make things worse.

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is an artificial root made of titanium metal. It is inserted into the jawbone to replace the root of the natural tooth. An artificial replacement tooth is attached to the implant. The implant acts as an anchor to hold the replacement tooth in place.
