Of course insects and similar type critters are plentiful in swampy wilderness areas but this one seemed particularly at home in Balstrup park.

Backyard Koalas in Balstrup park

Here is a great trivia question for you. What city in the world has the most wild animals living within city limits? If you guessed Brisbane Australia you would be correct. There are more wild animals that call Brisbane home than any other city in the world. Partly this is due to the many parks and recreation areas that are in Brisbane – often no build zones because of flooding risk. As a result there are lots of living space for the critters to live. Most people have seen Koalas around the cvity – sometimes on thje roads. Supposedly thirty thousand red bellied black snakes live in the downtown area – although you likely have never seen one. Large colonies of bats and birds are always seen. At dusk it is easy to spot bats. There used to be a family of Kangaroo’s led by a leader known as KANGA (Of winnie the pooh fame) living in North Lakes – a suburb north of the city.

Just north of the city in the suburb of Kallangur there is a great park called BALSTRUP PARK. Several kilometers long it makes for a great walking trail with a creek running through it – a creek that has meter long eels living in it – and lots of birds. Snakes, spiders and lizards live in the area. But the best of all are the resident Koalas. We had at least fourteen at one point. A true treasure with koalas permanently living within a hundred meters of houses. Your very own backyard Koalas.
