Sonic Superstars reveals very little to us about the details of its lore (with this potential ancient disappeared civilization and the Black Dragon). What is your interpretation of the lore of Sonic Superstars?

Anonymous

I honestly never felt like Sonic Superstars mattered to “the lore” very much and with Sonic Frontiers coming in and definitively saying the Emeralds are from space and connecting the Starfall Society to Chaos and early Echidna culture… inserting “oh yeah there were dragons in here too somewhere” is weird to me?

But I also never got around to finishing Trip’s story because in my opinion it made the game really bad and frustrating to play. I’m not against them adding hard modes but when that hard mode is basically “we created one very annoying new enemy type and flooded every level with them” then that really sucks.

So I never actually saw any of that Black Dragon stuff or how Trip’s super form relates to that or anything.

But as far as the legend of the chaos emeralds goes… we’re getting pretty overstuffed. Starfall society, Echidna culture, Perfect Chaos, Dark Gaia, and now some evil dragon, too?

The only thing I can figure glancing at a wiki is maybe the Black Dragon, being that specific shade of purple, is something charged with Dark Gaia energy? It’s definitely got shades of Dark Gaia colors.

The unused concept art for the Black Dragon looks even more Dark Gaia adjacent, too:

I suppose it could be an effort to expand on why there were shrines in Sonic Unleashed that channeled and restored the power of the Chaos Emeralds.

the thing about Lemon Demon apparently being “TikTok music” is I feel like a boomer for knowing Lemon Demon so ???

you mean Trapezoid, the Hyakugojyuichi guy?

One day a 15 year old is going to look the current generation in the eye and say “The Amazing Digital Circus? That’s boomer shit”

You can either choose to be

Have you played Sonic Superstars in co-op mode with friends or family? Any thoughts on co-op mode?

A friend wanted to do some Sonic Superstars shareplay on PS4 but we never got around to it because I was busy/distracted with other stuff. And now that PS4’s dead, so it’s gonna be a bit before I can replace it.

I did however watch a little bit of Somecallmejohnny and his crew (SGB) play 4 player co-op and it looked like a total nightmare. Not only did the camera never know which player to focus on, it seemed to make the game buggy as hell as tons of stuff started breaking in co-op. Collision detection failing, bosses not working right, the whole nine yards.

Seemed like co-op was an afterthought that got bolted on at the last second.

maybe you've talked about this somewhere before, but do you have any favorite 2D sonic bosses?

I mean, none jump out and make me go “oh wow I could fight this boss on repeat forever.”

I don’t think they’re bad, but I do think that’s why it feels so disappointing that Sonic Mania and Sonic Origins make changes so boss fights take longer. Making Sonic bosses slower and more tedious does not increase how enjoyable they are.

A Sonic boss should be the sort of thing where you’re able to hit Eggman the moment he comes on screen, and if you’re good, the whole thing takes under 30 seconds. It’s not supposed to be something you really have to stop and think about too hard.

It’s not an epic minutes-long ordeal where the boss has three forms or Eggman is mysteriously invincible for the first ten seconds of the fight. It’s supposed to be this breezy little minigame you have to do every 3-5 minutes as a palate cleanser. It’s less of a fight and more of a reset button for the pacing.

Doomsday Zone is cool, I guess. But that’s less for the gameplay of Doomsday Zone and more the role Doomsday holds as a big huge long crescendo. And saying this out loud now, I have a feeling every boss in Sonic Mania was intended to be its own Doomsday Zone level event, which is why they all take so long, and why it’s such a problem. You can’t have Christmas every day, kiddo.

…I can’t remember Metal Sonic ever actually firing a laser in Sonic the Fighters. It’s a game I’ve played more than most probably have.

Metal Sonic is kind of STF’s “Dural” in that he borrows some moves from other characters. He’s also VERY fast, and hits VERY hard. If he lands a grab (like his version of Tails’ airlift grab) then that’s probably close to half your health gone in a single move.

But only two or three characters have projectile moves in the game. Amy has a special where she throws a hammer, Bean can kick and throw bombs, and most of Fang’s moveset is based around his popgun.

Metal Sonic doesn’t get anything like that. The CPU mainly uses the basic punch combo, the drill spin, the airlift grab, and one really nasty move where he stabs you with his claw.

But never any lasers. Not ever.

How’d you pull that off? I remember that guy shooting the crap out of me in the game like this

image

I have never seen Metal Sonic use this move in my life. I have even recorded an entire arcade mode playthrough using Gems Collection on the Gamecube:

Here’s a timestamp for when I fight Metal Sonic, and here’s an additional five minutes of me losing to Metal over, and over, and over again because he’s such a cheating bastard that can break out of stun whenever he feels like it.

I’m really not. You’re coming into my house, slapping the sandwich out of my hand, and giving me a “LISTEN, BUDDY, I’M GONNA TEACH YOU A THING OR TWO” speech I did not ask for. You were already riled up and kicked my door down about it.

And then, when I gave you the spotlight, this is your response to me. Sure, yes, I basically said “I’m not going to engage with this” but I didn’t even have to go that far, now did I? I let your message stand on its own and basically said “That’s great. Now, moving on…”

I could have deleted it. Nobody but you and I would have ever known that message existed. I did not do that.

What I was clear about is that I have local problems of my own that I’m paying more attention to. What’s going on in Palestine is awful. I hope for safety and peace for all of those feeling threatened right now. I want it to end.

But I also deliberately keep my distance from it because I’m already poisoned with enough worry about my own life. Laying in bed awake some nights unable to sleep because I don’t know what tomorrow is going to bring for me, right here, right now. I don’t also need to be caught in a constant worry-loop about the tens of thousands of dead people an entire ocean away from me.

If you can’t understand that, if you can’t understand me, then we’re at an impasse. But it’s my blog, my house, and my rules. You don’t get to dictate what and where I need to feel bad.

"People who do it for heritage reasons rather than political ones." I need you to be aware that wanting to expel Palestinians from land they have occupied for longer than the existence of Israel in order to create a Jewish ethnostate by slaughtering every Palestinian or driving out the ones who are still alive is something inherently political regardless of 'heritage reasons' because this is genocide aided and abetted by Western governments who want a satellite state in the SWANA region. Also please don't conflate Judaism with Zionism by saying stuff like "He is, however, jewish, so you can maybe see why he'd align with Israel on a basic level" as there are many many MANY jews who do not agree that Palestinians should be slaughtered for the creation of an ethnostate, and in fact there are more Christian zionists than there are jews on the whole planet.

Okay.

Not a conversation I’m having at this time though, and definitely not on this blog.
