    The Same Name Cover Band

March 11, 2024 By Joy Lynn Clark Back in February I went to a live music venue not far from my place called Banners. I had gone there right when I first arrived in Lexington to see a cool jazz band in the past. This time however the place was packed with colored folks as well as what I normally encounter in Lexington. It almost seemed as if the entire black UK alumni Association was there and half of them had on the blue and everything! Even though I am a Flame, Go Wildcats! I asked the bartender to place my order and he replied, “would you like to start…

Alone (Noon-Missed You For So Long, Love You Since The Dawn)

2/20/2024 By Joy Lynn Clark After all of these years, I finally found myself in a state of peace. I looked around my place and I started “fall cleaning”. I got rid of a lot of non-essential items around my apartment. Everything looks nice and neat. I take a deep breath and pour a glass of champagne left over from the crate that I ordered last holiday. Next, I pour the bubbly into one of the crystal glasses that I had inherited from my stepmother’s passing. Well, I really am alone now. I need to make some plans. Since it was just a few months ago that I had my…

    Visiting at Grandma’s

June 11, 2022 By Joy Lynn Clark Grandmas house was always lively. People would come and visit all the time. Many of my aunts’ and uncles’ friends would stop by because they are so fond of the family. At the time, we had relatives in town from California. My great aunt had just married a guy from Osaka and they Had all sorts of healthy looking treats which were all strange looking to me. The most strange – nori that’s the green part in the sushi. My California relatives were still in bed and I was chatting with grandma and grandpa at coffee time and drinking my narco cough syrup because…

    The Panhandle

By Joy Lynn Clark May 30, 2022 Like I said before, Tez, Shystie, and I took many trips. In addition, another one of Tez’s friends and an artist on our compilation that features many Chicago rappers that we know. In addition, Su A.k.a. Billy bogus also came. I thought his name was funny as hell. I didn’t even think twice. Anyhow, we had a cool condo on International Drive. Shystie and I were in the bikini shop like, “we love this place!”. We checked out their crobar, it was Aiight. I was expecting nonstop night clubbing but we only had one night to deal with. Mostly it was day events that were super interesting.…

    Summertime in the country

March 31, 2022 By Joy Lynn Clark Throughout my life I have always had a weekend trip or sometimes a weeklong vacation in the country. By country I mean right around the lake in Michigan. I have been there many times. On mom’s side we would travel to our favorite orchard to pick apples and grapes. This orchard is the kind where patrons buy a wooden bushel basket and fill them up. I always wanted a really special thing with the apples but we mainly just eat them for a snack. Grandma‘s real specialty was wine and vinegar. As a kid, I had had plenty of vinegar to put on…

    Shopping in the burbs

By Joy Lynn Clark February 10, 2022 In middle school I moved from my mom’s house to my dad’s house. Mom took baby sister and her new hubby and moved to Indiana. I moved a few towns away but stayed in Illinois. I jumped right into my new life in a proper nuclear Family. Dad, stepmother, stepbrother, and I. Dad was always busy at work and grumpy. My step brother and I had a healthy fear. On the other hand, my stepmother was very welcoming and I came to see her as, “the good cop”. Saturday mornings were always shopping and chores. Stepmother would get up really early to go…

    Breaking My Heart

By Joy Lynn Clark 8/20/2020 Several years ago I went to lunch with a few friends. It was nice catching up with them. I shot the shit with them and let them all know about my pending Internet release of one of my albums. One of them was my girl from way back, the other two guys I didn’t know quite as well but I did remember them. One of the guys wanted to holler, and we exchanged numbers. After that, we talked on the phone a bit but he told me that he was in the military and then he was soon to ship out. I never saw the…
