Intellectual Property Practice

Kirk Dorius' practice focuses on patent and trademark filings, prosecution, licensing, and enforcement. Kirk advises clients on U.S. and foreign patent portfolio development and commercialization for a range of mechanical, manufacturing, medical, oil and gas, automotive, and electro-mechanical technologies. His intellectual property practice also extends to technology portfolio acquisitions, trademark registrations, and copyright registrations. Kirk has supported clients in acquisitions and funding rounds of collectively over $50 million. Kirk regularly provides patentability, invalidity and clearance searches, analysis and opinions to support prosecution, litigation and due diligence objectives. He also regularly counsels clients in contractual disputes and trademark adoption and enforcement.

Kirk Dorius has prosecuted patents across a broad spectrum of mechanical arts including, industrial load gauges, oil and gas wellbore drilling equipment, drug transfer devices, nuclear energy, medical radioisotope production, materials processing, coextrusion of films, touch fastener manufacturing, robotics navigation and energy management systems, power and hand tools, electrohydrodynamic fluid accelerators for electronics cooling, roofing and flooring underlayment fabrics, UV sterilization, biometric security, point of sale terminals, and stacked die packaging for integrated circuits. He has also prosecuted software-related patents for GPS-systems, health monitoring, telecommunications noise suppression, IT security, and blockchain MRO management.
Prior to starting his own firm, Kirk practiced with leading intellectual property and full-service law firms and served as general counsel for a nuclear technology company. He also served as a judicial clerk to the Honorable Richard Story of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia during complex patent litigation over extended-wear contact lenses. Prior to law school he worked as a mechanical engineer in the ICBM ground support division of a major defense contractor.
Drawing on his background in intellectual property law and nuclear technologies, Kirk also currently serves as CEO and General Counsel at Atom Mines and previously served as President of the Pointsman Foundation (www.pointsman.org), a nonprofit organization advancing domestic isotope production for medical diagnostics and cancer therapies.
