About Dr Rock Education

What we provide...

Dr Rock Education was established in 2017 and provides to the public custom made classes and short courses in the earth sciences. Courses are typically 8-10 weeks long (meeting one evening per week) and provide a broad introduction to a particular branch of geology such as "rocks and minerals". Within these courses, students have the freedom to sign up to the whole course or only to sessions that are of particular interest - you may for example only be interested in the two classes on volcanic/igneous rocks.

We promote the philosophy and tradition that education and opportunities for learning should be open, life-long and accessible to all. No previous geological knowledge is needed for any of our classes. We provide classes for both younger learners (7-11 yrs old) and adult learners (12+ yrs).

Classes are held within an inclusive and fun learning environment, taught by a teacher with a passion for the subject. Classes are intentionally hands-on, and will provide the student with life-long practical skills in investigating geologic materials. This could involve learning how to identify the more common rocks and minerals found in Great Britain; or investigating many of the fossil groups that make up the record of life on our planet.

His research specialises in earth history and climate change in the recent geologic past. After completion of his PhD, Glenn worked in the United States, first as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History (in Washington DC), and then as a Lecturer in Geology at several universities on the east coast. These included Temple University in Philadelphia, the University of Baltimore, and at the prestigious George Washington University in DC.  Glenn returned to the UK in 2016 and worked as a Lecturer and Research Associate at the University of York, before settling into a Senior Lecturer position in Earth Science at Kingston University, London.
