😊 Health Tip!

Oregano

This aromatic herb that is often used as a pizza spice contains thymol and carvacrol, two incredibly powerful antimicrobials, which have been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria. A recent study also showed that carvacrol inhibited proliferation and mitigation of colon cancer cells, concluding that carvacrol may have therapeutic effects on prevention and treatment of colon cancer.

# How it works

I believe that people can optimise their health by developing a deeper understanding of nutrition whilst simultaneously keeping healthy eating enjoyable and practical.

Most of my consultations take place at my clinic on 9 Upper Wimpole Street, W1, or online via Zoom. Our consultation will consist of a discussion and evaluation of your lifestyle and eating habits with the objective to make any nutritional changes easily adaptable and flexible – irrespective of your age and condition. The focus is on realistic and achievable changes.

My main interest is in disease prevention through lifestyle and dietary changes as well as strengthening the immune system. After completing my training as a functional medicine practitioner, I have learned to look for the underlying root cause of the symptoms. Alongside this, I provide support for a variety of conditions such as stress, digestive disorders and auto-immune conditions alongside many others as well as advising families on family nutrition.

    Tomatoes

Tomatoes contain lycopene, a red coloured carotene, which is known to be extremely protective against breast, colon, lung, skin and prostate cancers. Lycopene is known to naturalise harmful oxygen free radicals before they can damage cells. A recent study from 2016 concluded that lycopene also inhibits cell proliferation and triggers apoptotic cell death in prostate cancer.

    # About Me

With close to ten years’ experience in the world of nutrition, I believe that addressing the root cause of the problems lead to better results in improving people’s health.

In 1995, I received a BA in Mathematics and Italian from Connecticut College, USA, before moving to London a year later to work at the London Stock Exchange. In 2004, when I was pregnant with my first child, I started Figure Fit: a specialised heated Pilates and weight-loss centre in Chelsea. It was here that we had a resident Nutritional Therapist to offer advice to clients on dietary and lifestyle choices. After working closely with the therapist, I was inspired to learn more.

My involvement in competitive sailing for the Turkish National team from the age of 12 (and for much of my adult life) kickstarted my lifelong passion for food and sport – although my odd love for bottarga (fish roe) as a child did prompt my parents to label me a ‘foodie’! This passion is what influenced me to start Figure Fit in 2004 and subsequently begin my career as a Nutritional Therapist. I have since completed four years of studies at the Institute for Optimum Nutrition (ION) in 2015.

After deciding to continue my education, I became a member of the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) in the USA and completed the AFMCP qualification in 2018. I have now finished the rest of IFM’s seven Advanced Practice Modules and am working towards becoming a certified IFM Practitioner. In the UK, I am registered with the British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine (BANT) as well as the Complimentary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC).

I am committed to continuing my professional development and I regularly attend courses and lectures on a variety of topic to consolidate and extend my knowledge.

    Beetroot

Beetroots are known to have stimulating effects on liver detoxification. Beets get their rich purple colour from betacyanin, which has been shown to be a strong cancer-fighting agent. A study conducted in 2015 also showed that beetroot extract has cancer preventative effects against different types of cancers.

    # Testimonials

I value the opinions and feedback of all my clients and am proud to have made such a difference in improving their quality of life.

I have been a patient of Emine Basak’s since she founded her company. She has helped alleviate hay fever I had for a decade, managed some issues with my thyroid successfully and later, helped me through the menopause with minimal symptoms as I worked full-time and travelled for my job. I see her regularly as she is a great partner for any health issue or wellbeing matter I am thinking through. I see her in addition to any doctor as I love the rigour she applies to my blood tests that my (private) doctor won’t spend much time on. I learn a lot about my wellbeing from her and cannot imagine thinking through anything about my health without her. I strongly recommend her.

When I started consultations with Emine a few years ago, she suggested to eliminate several food items from my diet that, at the time, were essentials to me. I though “no way” but Emine has a way of working with you to help you move through the process. Six months later my chronic back pain was gone along with twelve pounds. Her awareness in health is contagious. I cannot thank Emine enough and I highly recommend her consultations.

Before starting with Emine, I was struggling for 5 years to lose weight and improve my health even though I worked out constantly and followed a healthy lifestyle. In the last 4 months my life has turned around because of the changes made with the nutritional program that she has designed for me. I am much more health and stronger because I finally found my way gradually to reach my goals and I am super glad I was able to meet Emine and start this journey.

The past 4 years I have struggled with severe health issue that included low energy, constipation, low
libido, brain fog, severe mood swings, earache, dizziness, loss of balance, hairloss, weight fluctuation
and then an under active thyroid. I had seen various specialist which lead me to take synthetic
medication which worsened all of my conditions.
I was at an all time low and felt there was very little help for any of my symptoms, quite a worrying
thought when dealing with all of the above.
After meeting Emine, having a blood test and discussing all of my health issues in depth, Emine came up
with a holistic approach that has benefited me far beyond anyone that has dealt with my symptoms.
8 weeks on and I’m feeling full of energy and the happiest I’ve felt in the last 4 years. Nearly all of
the above health issues have all subsided and I’ve lost 2.5kilos (bonus!)
This journey has been extremely rewarding and I look forward to my future of feeling energised, healthy
and most importantly very happy again!
Emine I cannot thank you enough and I highly recommend your services!

Emine Basak’s holistic approach has helped me restore my “mind-body-spirit” balance that was set off track after a major car accident. Working like a true detective, she has raised awareness for my everlasting health issues by drawing out the related cause and effect relations that otherwise seemed unrelated or disconnected. Her passion and respect for her work is reflected in her enduring, comprehensive research and always up-to-date methodology. She takes on her patients’ issues as if her own and checks in regularly to ensure their overall wellbeing. I cannot thank her enough for my improved health, resilience and life quality.

Emine is an extremely skilled nutritionist who has helped me greatly and someone who I would highly recommend. She has always been there to geode me through any questions I have had as well as providing excellent advice. A few weeks ago, I caught COVID and without Emine I would not have been able to recover as well as I did. She really helped me and went above and beyond to ensure that I had what I needed for my energy levels to be maintained, allowing me to make a full recovery. I have also seen amazing results from her advice as I now know and understand how to eat better and change the way I eat to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle. I also have a better understanding of my body from the changes I have made. I could not be any happier and can’t thank Emine enough for all her help and support!

Emine Basak is an old friend of mine whom I truly admire as a human being. I am extremely pleased that she has been in my life as my nutritional consultant since September 2022, as my health has considerably improved during this time. For the last 15 years, I have been proud of my nutrition habits, following a plant-based and fibre-rich diet as a vegetarian. However, during the first six months of the COVID-19 pandemic, I experienced constant diarrhoea, nausea, and vomiting, occurring two to three times a day. Due to concerns about the pandemic, I was hesitant to visit a doctor. Instead, I consulted a well-known Gastroenterologist over the phone, at Emine’s suggestion. After a thorough examination, I was diagnosed with microscopic colitis. The prescribed treatment involved taking a pill twice a day for the rest of my life to manage the symptoms, without any specific dietary suggestions or instructions. Although I managed to find my own “eats” and “don’t eats” and felt fine, two years later, I started experiencing unusual symptoms in my bowels, such as floating, gas, nausea, and occasional diarrhoea. This time, I had more time and patience, so I made an appointment with Emine. Prior to our official consultation, she advised me to eliminate dairy (which I didn’t consume much of, as I was almost a vegan) and gluten from my diet. She also suspected that I might have leaky gut syndrome. After a month and a thorough microbiota test, it was confirmed that I indeed had a serious case of leaky gut, and my body did not tolerate gluten at all.

Emine Basak is not only a nutritional therapist but also a holistic health consultant, taking into account various aspects of a person’s life, including age, sex, psychology, and daily habits. She goes beyond just focusing on the gut health and considers the overall well-being of her clients. In my case, she not only helped improve my gut health and manage symptoms of leaky gut syndrome, but she also addressed other health issues such as rheumatoid arthritis and menopause-related symptoms. Thanks to her expertise and perspective, I have been able to stop taking cortisone medication for joint pain and have experienced improvements in my overall health, including hot flashes and mood swings. I am extremely grateful for her guidance and would highly recommend her to anyone seeking a comprehensive approach to their health.

    Turmeric

A backbone of traditional Chinese and Indian medicine, Turmeric is known to be one of the best natural anti-inflammatories. The yellow pigment of turmeric is called curcumin, which is known to protect cells from free radicals, which may damage the cellular DNA, leading to various types of cancer. A meta-analysis published in 2016, looked at eight RCTs and concluded that curcumin lowered circulating key inflammatory modulator, such as TNF.
