ELeMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL TUTORING

asdf.JPG

The Learning Center provides opportunities for children in 1st-8th grade to receive one-on-one tutoring in either math or reading. Students meet weekly with a committed volunteer tutor who provides not only academic help, but also mentorship through everyday life. The goal of the Learning Center is to aid members of Pen Lucy toward upward mobility by offering tools for academic empowerment. Our curriculum reinforces classroom-based learning aligned with the Maryland Common Core curricular standards, with support from the cutting-edge tutoring software Study Island. Students who participate in the Learning Center program often improve by as much as one grade level in their reading or math skills over the course of the year.

SUMMER enrichment

Summer@Faith

Summer@Faith is an evening summer enrichment program for young people in Pen Lucy and the surrounding Baltimore area which provides opportunities for performing arts, reading development, and Christian education. Offered in collaboration with Faith Christian Fellowship Church, Summer@Faith runs three nights a week during the summer months, providing quality programming that brings together a diverse group of young people around shared interests in literacy, the arts, and spiritual development. The Summer Reading Club pairs students with a 1-on-1 reading buddy to read books of the student’s choice, building literacy skills and a love of reading in a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. On a second night, PLANarts offers exposure and instruction in music, visual art, dance, or slam poetry/spoken word, allowing students to choose and explore an art form for the summer, building up to a final public performance. On a third night, Bible Camp invites younger learners explore the Bible and learn more about God’s love through stories, games, and fun activities.

high school personal development

For years, parents of students involved in our Learning Center have been asking us to extend our educational services beyond 8th grade into high school. Starting in Fall 2019, PLAN unveiled Launchpad, a program for high school students who have graduated from our Learning Center. Students are given a supportive environment to work on a variety of goal-setting projects and personalized academic development plans, exploring topics like study skills, time management, financial literacy, professional writing, and career exploration. Fall 2019 will be our pilot program with a small group of former Learning Center students, and we hope to open Launchpad to the public in the following years.
