DOS

• Always split 8-11 if the dealer has a 4-6 as their face card.
• Always split 8s against any dealer face card. This may sound counter intuitive, but the logic here is that 16 is an absolutely horrible hand. By splitting it, you in fact stand a strong chance of ending up with quality hands of 18 or higher. And, if the dealer has a weak face card such as 4-6, you have two favorable spots ahead. The first is if you happen to catch a 2 or a 3, by which you may double down in a very favorable spot. The other is simply that the dealer has such a strong chance of busting anyway that you just want to throw as much money on the board as you possibly can.
• Whenever the surrender option is available, however, you want to give up 14, 15 and 16 whenever the dealer has a ten value card or an ace. If the dealer has an ace, you will also include 5, 6, 7 (hard only), and 12-17.
• Double down when you have a soft 18 (A+7) and the dealer has a 3-6 face card. 18 is not as strong as it may sound. And here, you are putting extra money on the line both because of the dealer’s inherent probability of busting in combination with your still good chances of improving or maintaining your hand’s status quo. The main objective with the double down is because you are in a truly favorable spot and want to commit as much extra money as you possibly can.
• Make sure you know the rules! Sometimes the correct play is to do one thing if a certain rule is allowed, and another if it isn’t. Not knowing the rules and adapting your basic strategy accordingly will add to the house advantage at blackjack. One such blackjack example is when you are dealt two fours. If doubling is allowed after a split, then you should commence to split 44 against a dealer’s 5 or 6. If not, you simply hit.

DON’TS

• Don’t count cards at blackjack online unless you play at a live blackjack casino online with a live dealer. Even then we advise everyone to only count cards if you really know what you’re doing, as any tiny card counting mistake quickly piles up losses. Few people know of this.
• Never split tens. 20 is a wonderfully strong hand. The third strongest there is (and yes, that is not a typo: first in line is a blackjack, then comes a 21, and then, in third place, we have our solid 20). Why would you go about ruining it? You don’t tear apart a Michaelangelo painting with the hope of the torn away part being replaced by a piece of Rubens, do you? No. And that’s exactly our point! The best thing that can realistically happen if you split tens is that … well, you get another ten. What is far more likely, however, is that you will find yourself with two mediocre hands of 12-18 and with twice as much on the line.
• Don’t buy insurance whenever the dealer has an ace, unless you have strong cause not to. It’s a losing bet.
• Never play blackjack where a blackjack pays less than 3:2. This is a good part of the game and any lesser payout than that may severely alter the blackjack odds to your disadvantage.
