About Ixil-Maya
Ixil-Maya is one of the 21 different Mayan languages spoken in Guatemala. There are three main varieties of Ixil: Nebaj, Chajul, and San Juan Cotzal. Some linguists consider them to be three distinct languages, while others consider them dialects of a single Ixil language. Approximately 70,000-80,000 people speak the three varieties of Ixil.
Sheba (Juanita) Velasco
Sheba is an Ixil interpreter and Mayan weaver from the highlands of Guatemala. She specializes in knowledge of contemporary Mayan culture and the Ixil language spoken in Santa Maria Nebaj, Guatemala.
In 2016, she was appointed the international ambassador for peace and tourism by the government of Guatemala.
Like many native Ixil speakers, she has both Mayan and Spanish first names – Sheba Velasco is her given Mayan name, while Juanita Velasco is her legal name.
She has worked in many museums, culture centers, schools, and universities in Central America, North America, and Europe. Most recently, she was employed for 11 years by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, in New York, NY, and Washington, DC.
She moved to the United States in 1981 and is a United States citizen. She speaks Ixil Maya, Spanish, and English fluently, and has knowledge of conversational Italian. She is a member of the ActiVoz Interpreting Group for indigenous languages.
