artist statement

“Social practice, in any art form, involves individuals and communities in debate, collaboration and interaction. Contemporary graphic design is unquestionably set-up to influence and engage an audience. By definition, graphic design is viewed simply as visual communication, but by practice, is much more. Successful design not only communicates, but influences, expresses, connects, and inspires.

As my wife and I continued our educations, we began to question what would come next. Agreeing we weren’t ready to settle down into the “American dream”, and happening upon the new van-life movement, we decided to give the minimalistic, travel lifestyle a shot. At the start of Summer 2016, the two of us purchased a green, 1993 Dodge Ram Van, named it Frank, and began the conversion of a custom home on wheels.

The GTFO Campaign not only showcases our personal story, but encourages capable* individuals, specifically through the use of social engagement and active participation, to improve their overall health by getting outside. Through the integration of art and design theories and practices with health behavior models of change, participants begin their journey towards an improved overall wellness.

*If you can get outside, you are capable.”
