Lamia Karen Holden’s Bio #2

Artist/Teacher

I hail from Sale, England with core parts of my soul rooted in the rich complexity of the Middle East. As far back as I can remember I’ve been absorbed with, or by art. Inherently, I’ve nurtured the expectation that despite our attempts at containment, time expands incomprehensibly. This is especially evident during periods of creativity, when time seems to magically hold still yet can disappear in an instant….like a vision. My synesthesia-like perception of color, light, and emotion has led me to the realization that color/light combinations can elicit deep stable contentment…or deep creeping anxiety. I’ve always possessed, without question the understanding that meaningful existence is singularly dependent on a curation and a balance of light, shape, color, empathy and creativity.

As a child in England I remember a realization…that I could make fantastical fan shapes with my paint loaded round brush; with a few twists of my brush I glimpsed the versatility and power of the instruments of art. One particular afternoon I created an abstract image that drew the attention of my art teacher and resulted in my being featured with my art in the local paper. When I moved with my family to the USA I continued with drawing and painting, and in middle school one of my encaustic paintings won the regional Boston Globe Gold Key award.

I come from a family educated in the hard sciences so a degree from an art school was never in the cards for me. Instead I developed my left brain with a degree and career in computer science and eventually ecommerce marketing. In order for me to find my balance I’ve made sure to expand time and nurture my artistic side.

For the last fifteen years acrylics, watercolor, and then encaustic painting have been my instruments of choice. Encaustic painting is a medium that allows me to express my inner spirit of curiosity. With practice I’ve learned to exert some control but there is an organic unpredictability to the medium and the process. I use my analytical side to form a plan but then I  indulge my creativity and engage in the flow of the beeswax, pigments, and damar.

A lifetime of appreciation and absorbtion of the beauty that surrounds us all gives me a foundation from which I can follow creativity.
