Le Maquisard

The Cross of Lorraine

The Maquis (French pronunciation: [ma’ki]) were rural guerrilla bands of French Resistance fighters, called les maquisards, during the Nazi Fascist occupation of France in World War II. Initially, they were composed of young, mostly working class, men who had escaped into the mountains and woods to avoid conscription into Vichy France’s Service du travail obligatoire (“Compulsory Work Service” or STO) to provide forced labor for Germany. To avert capture and deportation to Germany, they became increasingly organized into active resistance groups.

The Cross of Lorraine as the symbol of the Free French Forces led by Charles de Gaulle as an answer to the Fascist Nazi swastika.

In France, the Cross of Lorraine was the symbol of Free France during World War II, the liberation of France from Nazi Germany, and Gaullism and includes several variations of a two-barred cross.

The Cross was displayed on the flags of Free French warships, and the fuselages of Free French aircraft. The medal of the Order of Liberation bears the Cross of Lorraine.
