Nyaa is a popular anime-dedicated torrent index. Nyaa is best known for anime and also hosts a number of manga books, games, audio and live action that can be downloaded from the Nyaa.si torrent index.

In short: nyaa is weeb for a cat's meow.

What happened to the Nyaa tracker?

The torrent site was taken down by various DDoS attacks in 2014. At these times almost every famous anime (torrent) site got DDoS attacks. Since Nyaa was the most popular target, anime sites like HorribleSubs, Tokyo Toshokan and AnimeTake were attacked and suffered downtime.

In May 2017 the site's main domains (nyaa.se, nyaa.eu, nyaa.org and nyaatorrents.info) were deactivated. In an announcement of Nyaa's previous mods, the reasons for the website's shutdown remained unknown. However, they were believed to be based on EU judgments that would jeopardize the proper functioning of Nyaa as it was then. In the following weeks, several forks were launched, some of which were based on the Nyaa Torrents codebase and the original torrent index. All alternative Nyaa projects had the originals NYAA in their name: Nyaa Pantsu, Nyaa.se, Nyaa2 and Nyaa.rip. They are followed by the latest projects named Nyaa ISS, Nyaa INK and Nyaa Si.

The Nyaa.si fork is the only remaining Nyaa torrent index to date. With around 50 million monthly visitors from all over the world, Nyaa Si is the de facto most popular anime and manga torrent site. All alternative Nyaa websites are providing a mirror of nyaa.si.

Just as the original Nyaa Torrents had problems because its torrent site was blocked in countries around the world, the successors' sites where blocked as well. Some time ago, Nyaa.si started blocking connections from known unofficial mirror sites, since some mirrors provide malicious content including miners, ransomware and are used to hijack Nyaa accounts. This resulted in those mirrors shutting down and a decent chunk of Nyaa's community being unable to access Nyaa due to ISP blocking in some countries.

The Nyaa.si tracker announce URL is http://nyaa.tracker.wf:7777/announce. Rules for uploading torrents on Nyaa.si are posted on https://nyaa.si/rules. Below is a small excerpt of the rules.

Nyaa replacements for Nyaa.se and Nyaa.eu

Nyaa.si – A community driven torrent index

Shortly after the end of Nyaa.se a replacement has been made with fansubbers like HorribleSubs uploading their stuff to it. HorribleSubs is a fansub group translating, timing, encoding and editing it's anime shows. The replacement domain is nyaa.si. The alternative Nyaa torrent indexer is build with Python, MySQL/MariaDB and Elasticsearch and its code base NyaaV2 published on GitHub.

Nyaa.si is currently one of the most successful replacements to the defunct Nyaa.se/Nyaa.eu website. There was no 'official' replacement, both Nyaa.si and another site named Nyaa Pantsu (nyaa.net) were 'unofficial'.

Nyaa.eu Warning

The operators behind the formally official Nyaa.eu domain is encouraging visitors to download a malicious client. The site states that Nyaa has gone underground and a VPN client is needed for unrestricted access to the website. Please stay away from Nyaa.eu.

Is Nyaa.eu a Fake Site?

The Nyaa.eu domain is no longer owned by the original Nyaa crew but by scammers who are tricking former users. The website looks like the original Nyaa (now Nyaa.si) but has no function other than to present advertisements. Stay away from Nyaa.eu and visit the community-based website Nyaa.si instead.
