THE SYMPOSIUM

IS ORGANIZED BY THE HELLENIC CULTURAL AND EDUCATIONAL CLUB FOR UNESCO SUPPORTED BY THE HELLENIC NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR UNESCO UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE I.O.A.

The Annual World Cultural Heritage Youth Symposium is being held on the occasion of the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. The Symposium is a contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals promoting “Education 2030” focused on SDG 4.7 as well as SDG17. It is also supported by the United Nations Regional Information Centre (UNRIC) and the UNESCO Chair in Intercultural Policy for an Active Citizenship and Solidarity – University of Macedonia, Greece..  The official language of the Symposium is English.

THE AIM

The symposium aims to bring together students and teachers from all over the world in order to raise cultural awareness, develop mutual respect and contribute to the creation of a new generation of world citizens that feel united in diversity and are willing to shape a sustainable future for everyone. This is being achieved through knowledge and experience exchange, interaction and collaboration on a common goal related to the world cultural heritage.

THIS IS OUR LIVING HERITAGE!

The World Cultural Heritage Youth Symposium 2024 focuses on the intangible heritage and invites students and teachers to engage in the topic by participating into various activities. Delegation of Honor 2024 is Denmark.

THE OBJECTIVES

  • Students will be given the opportunity to present a part of the intangible heritage of their country, expose their ideas and turn cultural diversity into a power for peace, security, and development for all.
  • Students will interact with the other delegations to understand different cultures and acknowledge the importance of the World Cultural Heritage on global, regional, and national level.
  • Teachers will be given a leading role in shaping the future generation through collaborating with colleagues from all over the world.
  • Participants will also have the opportunity to come in contact with the ancient Greek culture and civilization.

PARTICIPANTS

In the Symposium are welcome to participate teachers and students older than 12 years old of schools, universities and/or educational or cultural organizations and associations from all around the world. Minor students should be accompanied by at least 1 adult. All participants will receive a participation certificate signed by the organizers.

THE DATES: 17-21 April 2024

The duration of the Symposium is 5 days. The Opening Ceremony is on the 17th April at 18:30. Οn the 18th April all delegations will depart to Ancient Olympia and they will return to Athens on the 21th April 2024.

REGISTRATION

UNTIL 23 DECEMBER 2023

The deadline for the submission of the participation form is the 23rd December 2023. However, since the number of participants is limited, should the participants have reached the total number of 350 earlier than the 23rd December 2023, no further applications will be accepted.

THE OPENING CEREMONY

The Opening Ceremony of the Symposium 2024 is hosted by Pierce – The American College of Greece. The ceremony will take place at Pierce Theater, which is the venue of choice for exceptional and large-scale performances. The theater is equipped with exquisite soundproof panels and multiple surround sound monitors. For the needs of the Ceremony special equipment such as a large videowall, robotic stage lights, visual effect machines etc. will be added. The Opening Ceremony is scheduled to take place on Wednesday 17 April 2024 at 18.30 and its duration will be 100 min (est.). According to the Program, a variety of musical and dance acts performed by the students will take place during the Opening Ceremony.

ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation in Athens:

On the 17th April delegations will be accommodated at President Hotel: https://president.gr. The Hotel is conveniently located at the boundaries of city’s center, offering great access to Athens historical landmarks. Panormou Metro Station is just 700 meters away from our hotel, while Ampelokipoi Metro Station is only 750 meters away. Both stations provide easy access to Syntagma Square.

Accommodation in Olympia:

Delegations will be hosted in one of the accommodations listed below:

However, the final choice about the accommodation and the rooms of the participants will be made based on organizational criteria and cannot be changed in any way and under any circumstances.
Students are to be accommodated in 2-, 3- or 4-bed rooms and adults (teachers and coordinators) are to be accommodated in 1- or 2-bed rooms.

THE DECLARATION

Before the end of the Symposium the participants will sign a resolution on the protection of the World Cultural Heritage.
The Declaration will condemn any assaults and crimes committed against World Heritage sites and focus on the fight against any attack on cultural diversity.
The outcomes of the Workshops on “Awareness through Education” will also be included in the document and will be forwarded by the organizers along with the declaration to:

  • UNESCO’s Education Sector
  • UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre

THE MEDICAL TEAM

IASO Children’s Hospital will support the World Cultural Heritage Youth Symposium 2023. The medical team of the hospital will be present during the Symposium in the premises of the I.O.A. in Ancient Olympia.

TRANSPORTATION

EXCLUDING DELEGATIONS FROM ATHENS

1. Arrival at the Athens International Airport
After their arrival at the Athens International Airport on the 17th April, delegations will be transferred by bus to President Hotel. The buses from the hotel to the Opening Ceremony will depart at 16.40.
2. Departure from Athens International Airport
Athens and the “Eleutherios Venizelos” Athens International Airport are 5,5 hours’ drive away from Ancient Olympia. It is highly recommended to plan your departure from Athens on the 21st April 2024 after 15:30 p.m.. If, due to the flight program of the airlines this is not possible, the delegations are strongly advised to consider the possibility of departing Athens a day later, on the 22nd April 2024. In this case, the accommodation fee for the extra night will be paid by the delegation directly to the hotel without any interference of the organizing committee. The organizers will provide any help needed.

Should any delegation ignore the above information, will have to pay extra for the transportation from Ancient Olympia to Athens International Airport.
