San Francisco and travels to the gold country with the expectation that he will find gold and return a rich man. However, he must face the difficult truth that life in the gold country is unpleasant and often brutal. He faces natural challenges like fierce heat and cold especially when he is standing in ice cold water for hours at a time. But the more trying challenges are man made, such as greed, slave trading and discrimination against non-anglo people. He reacts to each challenge differently, sometimes creating enemies, but more often finding and developing great friendships. In the end he returns to San Francisco and his love, Katy, a better and wiser young man. This story is historically correct and thus is informative as well as enjoyable to read.
