The final jurors have been seated in Donald Trump’s hush money trial, and an appellate judge has rejected the former president’s latest bid to halt the case. A hectic day in court Friday set the stage for opening statements to begin Monday. The panel of New Yorkers who will decide the first criminal trial of a former U.S. president took final shape after lawyers spent days quizzing dozens of potential jurors on whether they can impartially judge Trump in the city where he built his real estate empire before being elected in 2016.

The House has pushed a $95 billion national security aid package for Ukraine, Israel and other U.S. allies closer to passage. A key procedural vote gained approval Friday to move ahead with the bill, Democrats joining Republicans in a rare assist. House Speaker Mike Johnson has been making the rounds on conservative media working to salvage the wartime funding, particularly for Ukraine as it faces a critical moment battling Russia. His own job is also under threat as the restless right flank threatens to oust him from office. President Joe Biden sent a swift endorsement of the speaker’s plan. Final votes on the package are expected Saturday.
The U.S. and U.K. have imposed a new round of sanctions on Iran as concern grows that Tehran’s unprecedented attack on Israel could fuel a wider war in the Middle East. The Thursday action targets entities and and people in Iran involved in drone production. The sanctions were meant to hold Iran accountable for its weekend attack and to deter further such activity. But the practical impact is likely to be limited because many of the targeted companies already were subject to U.S. sanctions and the individuals singled out for new sanctions are unlikely to have assets in U.S. jurisdictions.
A Pennsylvania school district has canceled an upcoming appearance by actor and children’s book author Maulik Pancholy. The move came this week after district leaders cited concerns about what they described as his activism and “lifestyle.” Pancholy, who is gay, was scheduled to speak against bullying during a May 22 assembly at Mountain View Middle School in Cumberland County. But the district’s school board voted unanimously Monday night to cancel his talk after some members voiced their concerns and others noted the district’s policy about not hosting overtly political events. That policy was enacted after the district was criticized for hosting a rally by Donald Trump during his 2016 campaign for president.
