Teddy Niedermaier, composer and pianist, is an Associate Director in Budget Management at the University of Colorado Boulder. With over 10 years of work experience in higher education, Teddy leverages his unique background as a musician and professor to make a positive impact in higher ed finance and the arts. At CU Boulder, Teddy’s many duties include financial analysis, modeling, strategy, and new program development.
Teddy completed his MBA at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business in 2021 as a member of Booth’s full-scholarship Neubauer Civic Scholar program.
Until 2019, Teddy served as an Associate Professor of Core Music Studies at Roosevelt University in Chicago. As a tenured professor, Teddy provided classroom and private instruction for Roosevelt’s music theory and composition departments. Prior to his work in Chicago, he taught music theory at the Oberlin Conservatory, and served on the faculty at the European American Musical Alliance summer program in Paris for over 10 years.
Teddy completed a Doctor of Music degree in Music Composition in 2010 from Indiana University, where he studied with Claude Baker and David Dzubay. He earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Music Composition from The Juilliard School as a student of John Corigliano, Samuel Adler, and Robert Beaser. From 1999-2001, he studied with Alex Lubet at the University of Minnesota.
Teddy has received commissions from the Indiana University New Music Ensemble, Minnesota Youth Symphonies, Jasper String Quartet, New Juilliard Ensemble, New York Classical Players, Minnesota Symphonic Winds, Philomusica Chamber Orchestra of Minneapolis, Roosevelt University CCPA Wind Ensemble, Sheridan String Quartet, Sejong Cultural Society of Chicago, Gaudete Brass, Da Capo Chamber Alliance, Western Kentucky University, EAMA Chorale, and Hidden Valley Music Seminars. His compositions have been performed throughout the United States and in England, France, Germany, Ireland, Kosovo, Moldova, South Korea, and Japan. He was awarded the 2009 Dean’s Prize in Composition from Indiana University and the Palmer Dixon Prize from Juilliard. Teddy frequently collaborates with his wife, violinist Susan Paik, and their performances have been featured on Chicago’s WFMT radio.
As composer and pianist, Teddy has collaborated with such established artists as Thomas Stacy (New York Philharmonic), Robert Walters (Cleveland Orchestra), Elaine Douvas (Metropolitan Opera Orchestra), Linda Strommen (Indiana University), Roger Roe (Indianapolis Symphony), April Clayton (Brigham Young University), Daniel Stolper (Interlochen Arts Center), Nicholas Stovall (National Symphony), Meng-Chieh Liu (Curtis Institute), Jennifer Berg (San Antonio Symphony), David Conte (San Francisco Conservatory), and Nathan Mills (Grant Park Festival Orchestra). Teddy publishes his own compositions as a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP).
