Mental Resiliance has never been more important than it is today, especially on the basketball court
- A majority of basketball players will tell you that 90% of the game is mental, yet players often spend less then 10% of the time on the mental performance piece.
- I get asked why this critical aspect of training is so overlooked.
#1: Most people have a "fixed" mindset. They believe that skills like confidence, self-awareness, focus, etc. are aspects players either have or do not have. So if a player is struggling with the mental skills of basketball they assume that's just how they are and there is nothing that can be done about it.
#2: They simply do not know how to TRAIN mindset in a structured, consistent way so it is never addressed. So
instead they all their time focused on the physical side of basketball performance, thinking that is the best
and only way they can make an impact - hoping that will be enough.
Mental performance is a skill that can be trained and developed just like any other basketball skill
It's true! Just like you can develop a jump shot, improve your handles, or work on defensive quickness, you can train your mind to become more focused, resilient and confident.
But it doesn't happen on accident. You have to set an intention and go actually train your mind, just like you do your physical basketball skills. It is important to have consistency, structure and a proven method for success.
In basketball here are just a few of the mental skills you need to be a successful player:
1. Elite Mindset. As you learn to grow your mindset, you are finally able to blast through the mental barriers that have held you back for so long.
2. Process over Outcome. A huge piece of being a complete basketball player is to have the mental ability to realize that the true focus is the process. The outcome is a result that can change and sometimes you have no control over, however the process to becoming a great player you do have control over.
3. Self Control. With self control comes success. Tools to be and stay in control of emotions and performance will have the greatest impact on reaching your goals.
4. Confidence. Learning to have unshakable confidence and belief in yourself is the absolute key to being a successful basketball player.
5. Focus and Routine. Elite players have focus that is unbreakable. Part of this focus is because of routines they build. They build routines in all they do and it translates to high level performance.
6. The On Court Identity. The most impactful tool in sports performance today. A tool we have used for years to help build clarity, focus and confidence in ways players never thought possible. This tools helps with the up's and down's of basketball and really is the complete game changer for mental performance as a basketball player.
These mental performance skills and others like them is what we have been helping basketball players with for years.
It never fails! As they start to master the mental game, confidence grows, play improves and consistency is there.
The player that used to be a great practice player, but struggled in games, now learned how to take advantage of a few very specific, proven strategies that turn off the stress of games and get rid of the anxiety before competition so they can go dominate the day.
The player that would miss a shot, or have a bad game and it would send the spiraling into more mistakes, missed shots and more bad games now will have the ability to quickly overcome these challenges, realize what they can control and get back to performing the way they were meant to.
