During the ongoing renovation of the Hesburgh Library, I was thrilled to receive small sections of marble, removed to create more electrical access points. No one had laptops or iPhones when the library opened in the 1960s! I had the marble carved into library sized pieces, and placed them on maps of the campus.

This piece joins my Precious Relic collection of art. That is, art that combines my painting with bits of Notre Dame’s physical history such as stadium benches, basketball floor sections, roof tiles, 1888 window frames, purple heartwood benches, Rockne Studebaker hubcaps, and felled trees from campus.

Note In the bottom right corner of the map, you will find the Innovation Lab, where I have my Notre Dame art studio.

This art is an Irish Woodworks collaboration. It is and is designed to either hang on a wall, or be displayed flat on a table.

Corby Hall, a sacred site on the University of Notre Dame campus, is the primary residence of the Holy Cross priests and brothers. Built in 1893, it was demolished and rebuilt in 2020. It is named after our third president, Father William Corby. I have painted Father Corby’s most famous moment, immortalized in the statue by Samuel A. Murray, giving absolution to the Irish Brigade during the Battle of Gettysburg, on slate roof tiles salvaged from the 1893 Corby Hall. Please also note that the weathered gray brown wood is made from reclaimed redwood stadium benches: forever uniting “Fair Catch Corby” with Notre Dame stadium.

I painted a classic football reception on this vintage Oak Acorn MÓVIL gum-ball vending machine! It’s restored and painted with the official Notre Dame blue and gold. Made in the United States, this machine dispenses gum-balls for 25 cents. My original painting is on the front plexiglass panel, protected by a layer of plexiglass. The machine is in good working order and is ready to be used, shipped with gum-balls! This gum-ball machine measures 17”tall and 6”wide. Base is metal, and the machine weighs 13.5 pounds. Please note I’m open to painting your favorite player!

My latest Notre Dame precious relics are four panes of glass I removed from an Alumni transom window I found dumpster diving last June. Of course this penultimate discovery, during the renovation of Alumni Hall last year, is well documented in photographs. Two transom windows were saved: both were used as frames for portraits of this great hall. Alumni alums Jimmy Dunne and Richard Westenberger own the window framed paintings now, but the bumpy glass, covered in paint, was removed. I was able to save four panes of glass, and painted Clashmore Mike’s portrait on each. Alumni was built in 1931 with money generated from the Rockne National Champion football teams…that’s why you can find a relief of Rockne and Clashmore Mike on the east side of Alumni hall. The window glass, nearly 100 years old, measures 6x12”, framed 11x17”. All four unique original paintings.

It’s the 40th Anniversary of the Harry Oliver kick-another epic last second victory over Michigan!

“I’m a high school kid in 1980. Recall the previous year Bob Crable blocks the last minute field goal in the Big House to defeat Michigan in closing seconds? (Side note: it’s because of Crable we got Oliver- he was a Moeller High school classmate) This is a big game- the Wolverines are looking for revenge. I’m with my brother and we just can’t find any tickets to buy. A South Bend kid peddling programs, right out of a Dickens novel, tells us for $20 bucks, he can get us into the stadium if we pretend to sell programs. We put on these vesty things that hold programs and sure enough, we are in the stadium, but without tickets. Having been to many home games, we head to the chaos of the student section where you don’t need a seat, and the guards were not really looking for tickets. It’s a back and forth epic struggle. It comes down to a last minute drive where Dan Devine inserts freshman QB Blair Kiel. Somehow, with a couple of seconds left, the offense has managed to get close enough for a field goal attempt. Harry Oliver lines up for a 51 yard attempt. The wind stops. There is not a sound in the stadium. Then-! because we are in the student section and can see nothing-I hear a sonic boom. Or something that feels like a sonic boom. The score board changes to 29-27. Homeric!”-Kathleen Keifer

A hundred years ago Notre Dame won its first National Championship. A hundred years ago Kathleen’s grandfather was a freshman at Notre Dame, and played on the team with the legendary four horsemen. A hundred years later, Kathleen believes we have new legends on our team that can achieve a National Championship! Kathleen designed this 1924 Legends pin to remind us all of both our stellar history and our unlimited future.

The number 13 has always been lucky for the Fighting Irish...I think it began when Rockne’s football jersey number was 13. The jersey he was wearing during the David and Goliath victory over Army in 1913- an undefeated season!  Knute Rockne coached for 13 years. Love that Riley Leonard is 13...and that CJ Carr is lining up for 13 next season. Also notable that we have 13 varsity sports teams, and that the roster of the smoking hot women’s basketball team has 13 players. My favorite long view of campus has always been from Father Hesburgh’s office on the 13th floor of the library. And Pete Bevacqua is our 13th Athletic Director, which feels extra lucky to me! And let’s not forget that Taylor Swift’s favorite number is 13, which is relevant to Notre Dame because Taylor’s little brother Austin is ND class of 2015. Lastly, here’s  a very incomplete list of great players who wore 13: Pat Eilers, Tom Carter, Bert Berry.
