Artist Ah Xian with Claudia Chan Shaw
Chinese-Australian artist Ah Xian’s still and serene figures may be modelled from ordinary people but they have an otherworldly presence. Strangely formed rocks, highly valued by connoisseurs, sit like thought-bubbles on figures covered in gold leaf. The scales on another bust recall jade suits of the Han dynasty.
Ah Xian will discuss how he incorporates the work of traditional Chinese artisans in his practice. He will be in conversation with collector, designer and author Claudia Chan Shaw, who featured his work in her book Collectomania.
Ah Xian’s work can be seen in the exhibition Conversations through the Asian collections.

Studio Visit: Tao Xian
After four years in an oil painting program at Central Academy of Fine Arts, Tao Xian decided to take a break from drawing and painting to explore photography, video and printmaking. This pursuit brought her to New York's Parsons School of Design where she was able to work in new mediums, giving her new perspective toward oil painting.
By using software to manipulate found images, create computer glitch effects, or distort visuals, Tao Xian aims to present how technology and the digital world have transformed our relationship with the world. By putting the digitally altered images on canvas, the paintings act as screens that reveal how technology and the digital world have affected the way the real world is perceived…
