Design satirical parade floats for an annual carnival in the French Riviera’s most important city? Was this a dream or a joke?
It might have been a dream, but it was also very real. From 2006 to 2021 I had the opportunity to design thirty-one parade floats for the Carnaval de Nice. The drawings were selected in an annual contest, and local artists would sculpt and create these massive floats using the drawing as inspiration. Somehow, I still don’t speak French.

The Belle Epoque (1890-1914) is often considered a golden age in European history. Automobiles and movies were in their experimental infancy. Russian Tsars were vacationing on the French Riviera. Criminals, dancers, and artists were all getting sloshed at cabarets together. And somewhere Nikola Tesla had an alternate current running through his singed mustache.
But one glaring oversight is missing from the history books.
The birds.
